Cartier ties assist record as Saints close with field hockey win

Senior forward Courtney Cartier tied the St. Lawrence record for assists in a game in her final collegiate field hockey game as the Saints snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 5-1 win at SUNY Morrisville in the final game of the 2012 season on Saturday.

Cartier scored one goal and assisted on each of the others as the Saints had their most productive afternoon since a 6-1 win over Vassar in late September. She matched the single game assist record set by Tiffany Elsenbeck against Vassar in 2002. The Saints conclude their season with a 3-13 overall record while Morrisville is now 2-16.

Cartier set up the game's first goal as senior Ashley Ferenczy scored her first goal of the season in a scramble in front of Morrisville goalkeeper Nicole Gregg 11:14 into play and then Cartier scored what proved to be the eventual game winner at 30:11 on reverse stick shot from the left post. Sophomore Carly Stine scored her second of the year as time expired in the first half as Cartier set her up at the left post.

Stine scored her second of the game, tipping home Cartier's cross from the right side 9:38 into the second half, and after Rebecca Meyer put Morrisville on the board at the 56.45 mark, junior Emma Berry, a defender, scored her first career goal with Cariter assisting on a shot from 10 yards out with 18 seconds left in regulation.

Cartier accounted for nearly half of the Saint goals scored in the 2012 season with 12 and had 29 points in 16 games. She more than doubled her career point total in her senior year.

The Saints outshot Morrisville 37-27, but Morrisville had a 12-9 edge in penalty corners. Nicole Matos stopped all seven shots she saw in 44:38 while Brady Cooper made two saves on three shots in 18:25 and Kim Haab saved both shots she faced in the final 6:58. Gregg finished with 10 saves for Morrisville which also had a pair of defensive saves.
