Careys and Wick impressive in 4-2 Saints men's hockey exhibition win

One thing is certain after St. Lawrence University's 4-2 exhibition hockey victory over Carleton University at Appleton Arena Saturday night…the Saints do have a first line that can light it up.

The trio of seniors Greg Carey, Jeremy Wick and freshman Matt Carey combined for 11 of 12 points in the game, although none of the statistics from the exhibition win count, in an impressive and entertaining first outing of the season.

Each of the three scored a goal, Greg Carey had two assists, Matt three and Wick one…the other point in the game coming on a power play goal by rookie defenseman Gavin Bayreuther just off a faceoff win by Matt Carey.

The Saint coaching staff got a good look at nearly all of their 11-player incoming class, dressing 24 players for the game, and had to be pleased with the play of their freshmen defensemen and several others who turned in solid efforts in the exhibition.

Carleton, playing its fourth exhibition game of the year, took al 1-0 lead 11:28 into the first period as Jeff Hayes scored on a shorthanded breakaway, but senior goaltender Matt Weninger came through with a solid effort the rest of the way, making some big stops among 18 for the night to help the Saints to the victory.

SLU tied the game 6:17 into the second when Wick came down the center slot and took a pass from Greg Carey, rifling a shot just under the crossbar with Matt Carey also assisting. Bayreuther then rifled a one-timer off Matt Carey's faceoff win five seconds into a Saint power play chance to give the Saints a 2-1 lead at 15:02 of the second.

It went to 3-1 56:22 into the third when Greg Carey finished off a two-on-one with Wick with a little backhand flip past Carleton goalie Matthew Dopud, and while Carleton got one back with Mitch Porowski won a race with Weninger to a loose puck in the middle of the Saint zone and put it into the empty net at 9:43, the Saints iced it when Matt Carey curled one into the empty net on the Carleton end from Wick and Greg Carey at 19:09.

The Saints outshot Carleton 28-20 with 11 of the 20 Carleton shots coming in the third period. SLU, which has only had a few days of practice with its coaching staff in attendance under NCAA rules, went one for nine on the power play while Carleton was scoreless in six tries.

SLU opens its season for real on Friday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Maine in the first of a two game set at Appleton Arena.
