POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Plattsburgh (9-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) got a goal from senior defender Jason Baker in the 51st minute to defeat the
SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-6, 0-1) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals pressured the Bears early, but due to strong Potsdam defense weren't able to finish any chances in the first 45 minutes. Plattsburgh tested Bears senior goalie Jake Gyder just twice in the first half. The Cardinals held an 8-2 advantage in shots
midway through the first half, but Potsdam responded with a 5-2 burst of its own to finish the half.
Plattsburgh finally got on the board at 50:53. With a crowd in front of the Bears' net, the ball found Baker at the top of the box. He wheeled and
drove the ball into the left corner of the goal for the decisive marker. The goal gave Plattsburgh momentum for much of the remainder of the
contest, but the Bears created a several chances late. The best came with just under four minutes on the clock. Off a direct kick from freshman
forward James Turcott, senior captain Vic Colasacco launched a shot just high of the crossbar. The Cardinals were able to run out the clock after the chance.
In goal, Gyder and Plattsburgh senior Andy Heighington each finished with four saves. The Cardinals outshot the Bears 19-11 and finished with a 9-3 advantage in corners.
The Bears look to rebound next weekend as they head to Central New York to battle Oswego and Cortland. Potsdam faces the Lakers at 4 p.m. on Friday and the Red Dragons at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
