POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (3-8, 2-1 SUNYAC) held on for an 11-9 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-7, 0-2) on Wednesday night. Sophomore midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had three goals and an assist for the Bears. Senior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) had two goals and two assists, moving him into a tie for fifth place on the program's all-time scoring list with soon to be hall of famer Rob Mee '90 with 155 points. Junior goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) continued his strong play with 13 saves.
The teams alternated the first four goals through the first quarter. Junior attackman Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored for the Cardinals at 9:03 and 5:53, the latter a man-up tally. Soderquist scored Potsdam's first goal with a rocket into the top of the net at 8:04. He then set up sophomore attackman Nick Slate (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) with 1:15 left and the contest was tied 2-2 after one.
The Bears took advantage of a two man-up opportunity early in the second as Soderquist fed junior midfielder Gabe Carbone (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley) for their lone lead of the contest at 14:04. However, Plattsburgh answered with the next three goals. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Murphy (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tied the game at 10:29. Senior attackman Ryan Hubbard (Aquebogue, N.Y./Riverhead) struck at 8:22 and senior midfielder Billy Moller (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) made it 5-3 at 6:17. The lead was unchanged at the half.
Potsdam opened the third with two in a row. Huiatt closed the gap to one at 14:03 and Slate buried his own rebound on a man-up opportunity at 6:40 to even the score. Moller made it 6-5 at 5:16, but Soderquist tied the game nine seconds later with a helper from Huiatt. Again the Cardinals pulled away. Hubbard scored at 4:16 to ignite a 4-0 run. Senior attackman E.J. Suris (Kings Park, N.Y./Kingstown West) scored on an extra-man opportunity at 1:44 and Hubbard netted his third with 19 seconds after that and Plattsburgh led 10-6 after 45 minutes.
Potsdam senior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) made it a three -goal game with 8:08 remaining, but Hubbard scored his fourth at 7:20. The Bears weren't done, but ran out of time. Huiatt scored unassisted goals at 6:46 and 0:15 as Potsdam fell 11-9.
Cardinals senior goalie Donald Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made 10 saves for the win.
In addition to his offense, Huiatt had team-highs with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior long-stick midfielder Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won 11 faceoffs on the night.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host SUNY Oneonta at 1 p.m.
