POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (9-7, 5-4 SUNYAC) shot nearly 56 percent from the floor to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-15, 0-9) 73-32 at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Junior guard Kathleen Payne led the Cardinals with a game-high 15 points. Junior forward Jessica Kouzan paced Potsdam with 14 points.
Potsdam stayed even with the Plattsburgh through the first 10 minutes of the contest, but the Cardinals heated up for a 23-10 run to close the half. After a three-pointer from Kouzan knotted the score for the final time at 14-14, Plattsburgh took off. Sophomore guard Brittany Marshall answered with a three of her own at the 9:53 mark and the Cardinals never trailed again. Plattsburgh hit nine of their final 13 field goals of the opening 20 minutes to enter the break with a 37-24 lead.
The Cardinals didn't cool off in the second half, scorching the Bears with 61.5 percent shooting. Plattsburgh scored 36 more points in the final period and held Potsdam to just two field goals and eight points for the 73-32 victory.
Plattsburgh outrebounded the Bears 47-26. Senior forward Dana Nucaro and Marshall scored 12 and 10 points for the Cardinals. Senior guard Katy Briedis contributed nine points for Potsdam.
The Bears begin a four-game road trip as they head to Western New York this weekend. Potsdam faces Fredonia at 6 p.m. on Friday and Buffalo State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
