STATE COLLEGE, Penn. -- The SUNY Canton men’s golf team finished in seventh place Monday out of 19 teams after the first round of the 2012 USCAA national championship at the Penn State Blue Course
The Roos posted a team score of 335 on a cold day on the difficult par-72 golf course that measures 7,228 yards.
Temperatures hovered around 40 degrees when the tournament began Monday morning at 9 a.m. Daemen College seized the first-round lead with a score of 304. Penn State Mont Alto was second at 313 and defending champions Lindenwood-Belleville University was third at 315.
Junior Mike Reilly (Colton, N.Y.) shot a 7-over par 79 to finish day one in a tie for 14th place out of 108 golfers. Reilly shot a 3-over par 39 on the front nine and a 4-over par 40 on the back nine.
Junior David Parker (Canton, N.Y.) shot 42-40 for an 82 and a tie for 28th place.
Senior Jeremiah Hardin (Alpharetta, Ga.) shot an 85 (39-46) and freshmen Brandon Pupp (Oneida, N.Y.) (43-46) and Joey Holmes (New Hartford, N.Y.) (41-48) each shot an 89 to complete the scoring for the Roos. Junior Anthony Levato (Canton, N.Y.) also competed on Monday and finished with a 99. The four lowest scores make up the total team score.
The second round is scheduled for today with another shotgun start at 9 a.m.
