Byrne and Smith lead Roos to ninth at Cross Country Only Championships

Geneva, NY – Keara Byrne (Queensbury, NY) and Samantha Smith (Mooers Forks, NY) both placed in the top 50 individually as the women's cross country team finished in ninth place on Saturday at the Cross Country Only Championships hosted on the campus of Hobart and William Smith College.

Byrne was the first Roo across the line covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 21:29. Smith wasn't far behind finishing just 12 seconds later in 41st place. Rachel Youngers (Evans, NY) had one of her best races of the season producing a 23:38, 79th place showing. Kim McCarthy (Ludlow, MA) packed right behind Youngers in 81st place (23:41).

Laura DiFrenza (Salt Point, NY) was the final scorer for SUNY Canton in 24:57 (104th place). Meanwhile, Tabitha Taylor (Ticonderoga, NY) and Patti Carpenter (Penfield, NY) finished in 109th and 123rd places, respectively in 25:23 and 27:20. Bri Herd (Rochester, NY) rounded out the competing runners in 29:33 (129th).

The Roos finished in ninth place as a team out of the 14 team field, as they finished better than five opponents. SUNY Canton (266) edged Morrisville State (270), Medaille College (278), Hilbert College (285), SUNY Potsdam (302) and D'Youville College (326).

The cross country teams are back in action on October 29th at the Boo-Ha North Country Invitational hosted by St. Lawrence University. The women will race at 5:15 p.m.
