Buffalo State sweeps twin bill from Bears softball

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (9-6, 4-0) downed the SUNY Potsdam softball team (2-12, 0-4) in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Bengals held off the Bears 13-7 in game one and blanked Potsdam 12-0 in game two.

Buffalo State took a 1-0 lead on an error in the top of the first of the opener, but the Bears answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) scored on a ground out to tie the game and junior catcher Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) came around on a throwing error to put Potsdam up 2-1. However, the Bengals scored three in the second and two in each of the third and fourth innings for an 8-2 lead.

The Bears rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior second baseman Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) led of with a walk and stole second. Sophomore first baseman Erin Murphy (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) singled up the middle to drive in Lerman for the first run. Freshman pitcher Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) followed with another single to center to score Murphy. Ott then reached on a error and junior pitcher Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) drove in both Dougherty and Ott to make it 8-6.

The Bengals broke the game open with five runs in the top of the sixth, increasing their advantage to 13-6. Potsdam pushed across a final run in the bottom of the inning as Ott scored on another error.

Chirinko (1-6) allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Dougherty allowed seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits, while striking out three in the final 3.2 innings.

Maddie Coneys gave up six runs, three earned, on five hits in the first 3.2 innings and recorded two K's. Alison Novak (2-0) earned the win in relief, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in the final 3.1.

It was all Bengals in game two. Buffalo State scored four in the first, two in the second, four in third and two in the fifth. Alexis Haley (3-4) went the full five innings for the Bengals, scattering two hits and striking out six.

Bears freshman pitcher Jaime Hoskins (1-6) allowed six runs, two earned, on five hits in 1.2 innings. Dougherty competed the game, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Weather permitting, Potsdam is back in action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears host Plattsburgh for two contests.
