POTSDAM, N.Y.—Buffalo State (8-3, 2-3 SUNYAC) used a big first half to down the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-10, 0-5) 91-62 on Friday evening. Sophomore guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./North Side Charter) posted his first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and freshman guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) scored 15 to lead the Bears. Senior guard Jordan Glover (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joe's) had a game-high 22 points and five assists for the Bengals and senior forward Lovell Smith (Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) scored 15 to break the thousand-point plateau for his career.
Two 3-pointers from Buffalo State sophomore guard Dom Grayer (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) to open the contest sparked a 13-4 Bengal advantage in the first 3:54. A layup from freshman guard Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens H.S. of Teaching) got Potsdam within 26-17 at 11:16. The Bengals seized control of the contest with a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to grab a 41-21 lead. Buffalo State took a 50-28 advantage into the break.
The Bears climbed back into the contest with a 12-3 stretch in the opening 6:56. Onabor accounted for half of the points with two threes. Two free throws from sophomore forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) closed the gap to 59-47 with 9:28 to play. However, the Bears would get no closer as the Bengals finished out the 91-62 win.
Kane finished with eight points and five rebounds. Grayer had 15 points on the night and senior guard Nico McLean (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst) also reached double-digits with 13 for the Bengals.
Buffalo State shot nearly 46 percent from the floor, while holding Potsdam to almost 38. The Bears edged the Bengals on the glass, 41-39.
Potsdam wraps up the weekend when the Bears host SUNY Fredonia tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
