Brockport pulls away late to defeat Bears men's lax

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (4-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) broke open a close game late to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (1-4, 0-1) 16-7 in the teams' SUNYAC opener. Senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) had four goals and one assist to lead the Bears. Junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) had two goals and an assist to reach 101 points for his career and senior goalie Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made a career-high 23 saves.

Senior attack Jake Guidice (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) paced the Golden Eagles with four goals and two assists for six points. Senior midfielder Brendan Fitzgerald (Baiting Hollow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had three goals and two assists and sophomore attackman Brendan Recor (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) rounded out Brockport's leaders with four goals.

Stone got Potsdam off to a strong start with two goals in a 55-second span to put the Bears up 2-0 at 10:04 of the first quarter. The Golden Eagles answered with one from Recor and two in a row from Guidice for their first lead of the game at 4:56. Senior captain Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) set up Soderquist at 1:23 and the game was tied after 15 minutes.

Junior attackman Lukas Baildon (Berlin, Germany/JFKS Berlin) netted his first goal in a Bears jersey on the man advantage to make it 4-3 at 11:56 of the second quarter. Senior attackman Pete Barilla (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) followed with two goals in 41 seconds to ignite a 5-0 Brockport run. Guidice scored a man-up goal at 6:11 and Fitzgerald struck at 3:34 to send the Golden Eagles into the half with a 7-4 lead.

Fitzgerald then made it 8-4 just 1:31 into the third quarter. Freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) fed Stone for his third of the day at 9:34 to begin a 3-1 run for Potsdam. After Recor made it 9-5 at 8:27, Soderquist buried his second at 4:24 and Potsdam trailed by three after three.

Stone connected with Soderquist for a man-up goal at 13:25 of the fourth and closed the gap to 9-7. However, it was all Brockport the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles scored five goals in 3:32 and closed the game on a 7-0 run.

Brockport junior goalie Dallas Meyers (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) made 10 saves to earn the win.

Sophomore long-stick midfielder Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Bears.

Potsdam looks to bounce back on Tuesday when the Bears head down Route 11 to face SUNY Canton at 7 p.m.
