POTSDAM, N.Y.- Strong first half lifts College at Brockport (7-1, 3-0 SUNYAC) over the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-6, 0-3 SUNYAC) 95-59 on Friday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Sophomore guard Dante Langley (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) led the Bears with 15 points, while senior guard Devonn Gavin (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Magnet) had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Eagles.
Five minutes into the first half, Potsdam had a three-point lead, but a jumper from freshman forward Justin Summers (New York, N.Y./Bushwick Campus) sparked a 16-point run for Brockport. Senior guard Matthew Smith (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) capped the run with a three for a 14-point lead with under nine minutes to go in the half. The teams followed by going basket-for-basket, but the Golden Eagles struck again with a 19-5 run to close out the first half and head into the locker room with a 45-18 lead.
Langley opened the scoring with a layup in the second to start a mini 8-4 run for the Bears, but Brockport's offense ignited again. A 20-1 run that included three straight 3-pointers, that got the Golden Eagles out to their largest lead of the game. The run was stopped with five straight points from Potsdam then see-saw play continued for the rest of the contest that secured Brockport's victory.
Freshman guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) scored all 14 of his points in the final 10 minutes of the game and fellow freshman center Kristoff Saunders (Queens, N.Y./Queens H.S. of Teaching) finished with seven points and a team-high four rebounds.
Senior forward Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) scored 13 points and had a game-high four assists to tie Gavin. Senior forward Marcus Blythers (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) grabbed a game-high six rebounds and total 10 points, while sophomore guard Dwayne Daniel (Queens, N.Y./Lawrence) finished with nine points.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium when they face SUNY Geneseo at 2 p.m.
