Brockport downs Bears' women's hoops in season finale

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (13-12, 9-9 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-14, 0-18) 53-40 in the final game of the season. Freshman forward Secret Clark (Bronx, N.Y./ NYC Charter for A.E.C.I.) led the Bears with nine points and four rebounds, while senior forward Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) closed her career with seven points and seven boards. Olivia Suhr paced the Golden Eagles with 17 points and seven rebounds and Marissa Pike had 10 points and six boards.

Freshman guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford), Clark and freshman guard Janay Smith (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) each hit shots for Potsdam in the opening quarter, but Brockport scored the final four points in the first to grab a 10-6 lead.

The Golden Eagles extended their advantage to 26-10 at the 2:59 mark of the second quarter, before Potsdam closed the half with a 7-0 run to get within 26-17 at the break. Smith and LaVoie each had four points and and senior guard Laura Coleman (Manhattan, N.Y./Opportunity Charter) hit a 3-pointer.

Clark scored five points in the third quarter and Lavoie hit a three, but Brockport extended its lead to 43-27 after 30 minutes. Junior guard Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) also hit a bucket for the Bears in the quarter.

Potsdam's best quarter of the contest was the final one as the Bears outscored the Golden Eagles 13-10. Junior guard Abbey LaPage (North Bangor, N.Y./Franklin Academy) hit a three in the stretch and freshman guard Breanne Sapp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) and Smith had four and three points, respectively.

The contest brought a close the careers of seniors LaVoie, Coleman and forward Veronica Sapp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam).
