Sophomore midfielder Rob Brandell scored his fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute to help the No. 13 St. Lawrence men's soccer team shutout SUNY Canton, 1-0, in its final non-conference match of the season on Sandy MacAllaster Field. By picking up their eighth straight win the Saints improve to 11-2-0 overall on the season, while the Roos fall to 8-4-1.

With the Saints threatening early in the 18th minute, junior back Seyefe Brouk made a clean tackle in the middle of the field at the top of the box to take over possession on a clear attempt by SUNY Canton. Brouk dropped a pass to Brandell, who had time to tee up a high, hard strike that found its way into the upper right corner past Roos goalkeeper Patrick Anunziatta for the only goal of the game.

The Saints had a chance to increase the lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute, after Anunziatta made a save on a shot by Mark Provost but he was unable to control the rebound that skipped out to Noah Bunton as he came across the box. Noah carried the ball to the endline to the right of the Roos goal before crossing the ball back in front to his brother, Jeremiah Bunton. Jeremiah's shot rang off the left post and SUNY Canton was able to clear and escape unscathed.

With 28 minutes remaining in the second half the Saints hit another post, this time off the foot of Ryan Grant, who hit a shot from the right corner of the box that bent around the Canton keeper to the far side. The rebound came straight out to the Saints goal scorer, Brandell, but his one-time attempt was stopped point blank by Anunziatta and SUNY Canton was again able to clear.

Anunziatta did all he could to keep his Roos in the game, making 11 saves and punching away numerous free kick and corner kick attempts by the Saints, who dominated all offensive categories Sunday afternoon.

St. Lawrence outshot the Roos 35 -4, with 12 shots on goal, and also finished with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Additionally, the Saints defensive unit was stellar in the backfield, breaking up passes and heading down cross attempts to thwart any SUNY Canton chances before they even began.

As a whole, St. Lawrence did well to contain Canton's Nick Escalante, who is the team's leading scorer with 13 goals and seven assists this season.

Escalante had his one and only scoring opportunity of the day on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 60th minute. The Roos striker put his shot on the ground around the wall, but sophomore goalkeeper Sean Houston made the stop and then fell on the ball to squash any hopes for a second shot opportunity for SUNY Canton. Houston finished with two saves on the day for St. Lawrence en route to his eighth win and fourth shutout of the season.

The Saints will return to MacAllaster Field for a pair of Liberty League games against Bard and Vassar on Friday and Saturday afternoon, respectively. Vassar is currently the only other undefeated Liberty League team, sitting at 3-0 heading into next weekend's games.
