Bowes scores six as R$oos women's lax wins season-opener v. Castleton, 17-6
Canton, NY – MaryClare Bowes scored six goals and added an assist, while Molly Denny found the back of the net four times as the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team earned a 17-6 win in their season-opener on Saturday.
Visiting Castleton (0-1) scored the first two goals of the game, but SUNY Canton (1-0) responded with nine of the next 10 scores as Bowes and Denny provided three each to give the Roos a 9-4 lead at intermission.Canton netted five of the first six goals out of intermission to open up a 14-5 advantage as they cruised to the double digit victory.
Bowes led all players with seven points (6-1-7), while Allison Auger totaled two goals and three assists. Denny stuffed the stat sheet with four goals, tied for a game-high four caused turnovers and added three ground balls. Mia Jermano was a force defensively with game-highs of eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Carin Sherwood had an effective outing in her collegiate debut with a game-best seven draw controls to go with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Katelynn nUtter added a goal and two assists, while Devin Kelly (2-0-2), Logan Bush (1-1-2) and Cecelia Neally (1-1-2) all had multi-point games for the Roos.
Nicole Piskorowski turned aside five shots in her first collegiate win, while Samantha Hebb made 13 saves in the loss for the Spartans.
The women's lacrosse team will host St. Lawrence University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
