Queensbury, NY - Junior Sean Donohue and sophomore Kara Van Herwarde each earned top five spots in the giant slalom for the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team at the USCSA Eastern Regionals and helped lead the Golden Knights to yet another appearance in the USCSA Nationals in Oregon in early March.
The Golden Knights' men finished first among 11 teams for the second straight day, while the women also repeated by taking third out of 13 teams in the giant slalom.
Sean Donohue continued his late-season surge and took the top spot for the Knights, finishing third out of 59 skiers with a time of 1:39.30 in his two runs, finishing in the top seven both times. Senior Alex Slemp had his best showing of the season by taking sixth in the giant slalom with a time of 1:39.57, including a sub-50 second run in his second time down the mountain, one of only two skiers to do so on Sunday. The other, Hayes Lowth, finished ninth for Clarkson in 4:40.33, struggling to a 24th-place finish in his first run but pacing the field in his second. Freshman Greg Murray and junior Ian Williams were more consistent with their times, and finished 12th (1:40.46) and 19th (1:41.24), respectively, to round out the Clarkson men's skiers.
For the women, Kara Van Herwarde led the way for the second straight day, finishing fourth in both of her runs to take fifth overall among 61 competitors with a time of 1:42.67. Junior Kelly Rowland and sophomore Casey Abraham finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th, respectively, just .01 apart, with Rowland completing her time in 1:44.98. Junior Taylor Manderson finished 21st in 1:46.28 and freshman Sonja Gagen came in 25th in 1:47.21.
Clarkson will now head to Mt. Bachelor near Bend, Oregon, with the first alpine race occurring on Tuesday, March 3rd.
