GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (9-7, 5-4 SUNYAC) trailed 44-40 to the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-13, 1-8) at half time before rallying in the second for a 82-70 SUNYAC win on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Rishawd Hendricks (Brooklyn, N.Y./Mount Zion Christian Academy) paced the Bears with 17 points. Andy Drescher led the Blue Knights with a game-high 22 points and Gordon Lyons posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
After Potsdam scored the first four points of the contest on field goals from junior guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich) and senior captain Zac Adams (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam), Geneseo answered with a 9-0 run and held the lead for 10 minutes. At 5:28, junior forward Tariq McIntyre's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) layup tied the score at 27-27 and started a 19-9 run. Ninety seconds later, junior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) gave Potsdam a 32-30 advantage. Lamerson then hit two free throws to give Potsdam its biggest lead of the game at 44-36 with 1:30 left. The Blue Knights scored the last four of the half and the Bears took a four-point lead into the break.
The teams were nearly even for the first five minutes of the second half, but Adams hit a layup and a 3-pointer to build Potsdam's lead back to 55-50 with 14:26 remaining. Again Geneseo answered with a 9-0 run and never relinquished the lead. Freshman guard Matt Piercey (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) hit a three to get the Bears within 67-66 at 5:19 and a jumper from senior captain Greg Torchon (Spring Valley, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) kept it at 69-68. However, Potsdam couldn't get any closer as Geneseo closed the game out with a 13-2 run.
Estramonte finished with 15 points, Adams had 11 and Piercey posted a career-high eight.
The Blue Knights edged the Bears in shooting, 49-percent to 46, and 34-29 on the glass.
The Bears are back in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Friday night when they host Fredonia State at 5:30 p.m. on Bear Pride Night.
