POTSDAM, N.Y.- SUNY Fredonia (9-3, 4-1 SUNYAC) held on to defeat SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-9, 0-4 SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. A third quarter stumble lifted the Blue Devils over the Bears 74-54. Junior guard Laura Coleman (Manhattan, N.Y./Opportunity Charter) and freshman forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) each had a career-high evening with 13 points and five boards for Coleman and 10 points and five rebounds for Shopovick. Freshman forward Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) led Fredonia with 14 points, six boards and three steals.
Momentum lacked for both teams during the first quarter of play with the score 14-10 with Shopovick having six of Potsdam's 10 points. The Blue Devils came out with a fury in the second quarter. Junior guard Taylor Storer (Gerry, N.Y./Cassadaga Valley) opened the scoring with a layup and Fredonia went on a 20-4 run. It was capped with another made layup from Mccaulay at the 3:16 mark. Junior guard Abbey LaPage (North Bangor, N.Y./Franklin Academy) drained back-to-back threes for the Bears, but the Blue Devils took the 41-22 lead into halftime.
At 7:04 of the third quarter, senior forward Veronica Sapp (Potsdam N.Y./Potsdam) went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to fuel a 14-4 run for the Bears. Coleman knocked down a three to get Potsdam within 14 with 1:45 to go in the third. The Blue Devils answered with a 22-5 run that carried over into the final quarter that got Fredonia out to their largest lead of the game. Potsdam showed resiliency with an 11-0 run to close out the contest, but the Blue Devils took the 74-54 win.
LaPage was 3-for-7 from behind the arch for nine points and senior forward Katie LaVoie (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) tacked on eight points and four rebounds. Senior forward Sabrina Mccaulay (Newark, N.Y./Newark) tallied 13 points and seven boards and junior guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) finished with 10 points.
Potsdam will look to get back on track Tuesday when they face Middlebury College at 5:30 p.m. at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
