Canton, NY – With just a few minutes expired from the second overtime, Courtney Black scored her second goal of the season on a header to give the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team its first win over St. Lawrence since 1997, defeating the Saints 2-1 in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the Liberty League, pushing their Liberty League point total to 13. St. Lawrence dropped to 10-5-0 and 5-3-0.

The game-winner came in the first few minutes of the second overtime after Clarkson had dodged some close plays from St. Lawrence at the end of the first extra-session. After a foul was called on the Saints at about 35 yards out, Alicia Bushey sent a long pass into the box where a trio of Clarkson players was winding their way through the Saints' defenders. Senior Courtney Black got behind the defense and hit the ball downward on a header and the ball bounced once into the middle of the net as St. Lawrence keeper Samantha Allen protected the near post.

On the defensive for most of the first half, Clarkson watched St. Lawrence control play in the opening 45 minutes. The Knights were limited to just one shot in the first half when Alicia Bushey's attempt was denied on a diving stop by the St. Lawrence keeper at the 14:42 mark. That was Clarkson's only shot attempt in the first half, however, while the Saints totaled 13 shots, finally connecting on their 11th attempt of the game late in the period. Hannah Merriam possessed the ball in the middle of the penalty area but was surrounded by several Clarkson defenders, forcing her to pass the ball out to the top of the left of the box. There, Katie Clemmer collected the soft pass and hit a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the Clarkson goal to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage at the 36:55 mark.

In the second half, again the Saints seemed to possess the ball for the first 15 minutes, but things changed quickly at the start of the 61st minute. Sophomore Camryn Careccia stole the ball near midfield and calmly claimed space in front of her. Out of nowhere, Careccia ripped a shot from 30-plus yards out to surprise the Saints' defense, and the shot was on target, just out of reach of a late leaping Samantha Allen. Careccia's eighth goal came at the 60:09 mark in the second half.

From that point until the conclusion of the second half, the game was fairly even as Clarkson's offense took the spark from Careccia and enjoyed several other chances at the St. Lawrence frame. In the 72nd minute, Alicia Bushey nearly gave Clarkson the lead, but her shot went just high of the crossbar. A few moments later, the crossbar came into play again as St. Lawrence's Hannah Merriam almost put the Saints on top, but she, too, hit the top of the goal in the 79th minute. The second half proved to be pretty even as St. Lawrence enjoyed a much narrower advantage in shots (10-8) compared to the first half (13-1).

St. Lawrence finished with a 26-10 edge in shots and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks, but Clarkson keeper Elyse Green was up to the task, making nine saves, including a combined six in the second half and overtime. Allen made one save for the Saints.
