Bills and Cornish lead Roos volleyball to sweep at SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Junior Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) posted a match-high 14 kills and sophomore Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) added 11 kills and nine digs to lead the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) sweep of North Country rival SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday evening.

The win is the 15th in the last 16 matches for SUNY Canton (19-5). The loss drops the Bears to 6-18 on the season.

SUNY Canton controlled a majority of the first set and after the hosts got within 21-18, the Roos rattled off four straight points to take the first set, 25-18. After the Roos jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the second stanza, the Bears responded scoring seven of the next nine points. SUNY Canton showed its mental toughness closing out that frame, 25-22, producing 18 kills in the set. The Roos would continue to put the pressure on finishing off their Route 11 rival in straight sets with 17 more putdowns in the final set.

Bills led all players with 14 kills, while Cornish had an all-around strong effort with 11 kills, nine digs and three service aces. The duo was responsible for 28 points in the match. Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) also finished with double digit kills adding 10 to go with her nine digs.

Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) tallied a match-best 14 digs with two service aces, while Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) added 12 digs and six kills. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) set the tone offensively dishing out 43 assists, her third highest total of the season. The other two higher set totals came in four set matches (48 vs. Medaille) and (45 vs. Plymouth State). Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) showed her presence at net with three block assists on the evening.

SUNY Canton had a .254 team hitting percentage compared to a .155 mark for the hosts. The Roos finished with 47 kills compared to 26 for the Bears. SUNY Potsdam was strong at net finishing with 10 blocks compared to SUNY Canton's six.

The women's volleyball team will play in one final tournament to tune up for the 2014 USCAA Volleyball Championships. They travel to Center Valley, PA to take part in the Desales University Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
