The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team used an eight-goal second quarter to distance itself from Plattsburgh State on Wednesday, as the Saints earned a 14-11 win over the Cardinals in Plattsburgh, NY. Juniors Dave Hovey and Mac Johnson led the Scarlet and Brown with four goals each.

St. Lawrence, now 7-1 on the year, outshot Plattsburgh 49-32 and won the ground ball battle 44-28. They also won 19-of-28 face-offs in the game and went 5-of-9 on man-up tries while holding their opponents scoreless on man-up (0-for-4). Meanwhile, the Cardinals fall to 6-5 despite a 17-save performance by goaltender Gordie Gehring.

"We had a very good second quarter a back-and-fort first," said St. Lawrence head coach Mike Mahoney. "It was nice to get some guys some game experience, and now we'll need to focus our attention back on the Liberty League starting with Vassar on Saturday."

St. Lawrence took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but saw that lead vanish to a 4-4 tie after 15:00 minutes of action. However, the Saints' attack erupted for an 8-1 edge in the second stanza to take a 12-5 lead into halftime. Hovey scored all four of his tallies in the second, while Johnson added three of his goals. The visitors went on a 7-0 run in a span of 5:48 to close the first half scoring to open up an impressive advantage.

Sophomore Pierson Fowler would score the only goal of the third quarter with 3:08 remaining to push the Saints' cushion to 13-5 heading to the fourth quarter. Though the Cardinals rallied with six goals in the final stanza to close the gap, St. Lawrence's lead was too large to overcome en route to the 14-11 victory.

Fowler finished with three goals for the Saints, while Matt Pope, Tucker Garfield and Kyle Jacobsen each added one. Joey Kramer closed with four goals for Plattsburgh State, while teammate Tommy Kilderry added two.

Gehring suffered the loss despite stopping 17 shots. The Saints had three goaltenders share time, including Jeff Goeke, Jack Nuland and James Fuller. Nuland had the best of the play, making a team-high seven saves while allowing only three goals in the second half.

Senior Steve Cargill won 18-of-25 face-offs for St. Lawrence, while Cam Scullen posted a team-high eight ground balls.

The Saints will look to continue their impressive play at Hall-Leet Stadium on Saturday, April 7 when they host Vassar College at 1:00pm.
