POTSDAM, N.Y.—No. 22 SUNY Oneonta (10-2, 5-1 SUNYAC) scored three second half goals to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (6-4-2, 1-3-1) 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. Junior Cory Santangelo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored two goals for the Red Dragons.

The teams traded chances early, but slowly Oneonta pushed most of the play down into Potsdam's end of the field. Junior forward Brandon Laurin (Chazy, N.Y./Chazy) was robbed in close in the sixth minute, but most of the action was around the Bears net for the remainder of the period. Potsdam freshman goalkeeper Jake Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) made three saves in the first half, but the Red Dragons broke through in the 44th minute. Senior defender Zachary Southworth (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) played the ball ahead to Santangelo at the right side of the box. Santangelo spun around to his right and ripped a shot to the left of a diving Mitchell. The score remained 1-0 at the break.

After an even start to the second half, Oneonta took control again. At the 77:54 mark, sophomore defender Carlos Martinez (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) had his shot stopped by Mitchell, but senior midfielder Hans Purtell (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) knocked home the rebound. Just 2:09 later, Purtell set up Santangelo's second of the contest to make it a 3-0 game. At 84:41, junior midfielder Austin Hughes (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) sent a pass between two Bears defenders and found Martinez all alone. Martinez then beat Mitchell to close the scoring.

Mitchell finished with five saves on the day. Red Dragons freshman goalie Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) made two saves to earn the shutout.

The Bears head to Fredonia next Friday for a 3 p.m. showdown with the Blue Devils.
