Big second half powers Rangers past Potsdam women's lacrosse team, 16-7

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA.—Drew University (1-3) scored 13 second half goals to break a halftime tie and defeat the SUNY Potsdam Women’s lacrosse team (2-1) 16-7 in the first round of the Spring Fling Tournament. Drew’s Krysta Cento had a game-high five points (4g-1a), while senior attack Maribeth Simmons led the Bears with three goals.

The teams traded the first goals of the contest. Simmons netted her first at 17:55 to even the score at one. After Cento had regained the lead five minutes later, senior captain Carly Richards and Simmons struck for two in two minutes to give Potsdam its only lead at 3-2. Richard’s goal gave her 199 points for her career. Cento tied the game on a free position with 33 seconds left in the half and the score was 3-3 at the break.

The Rangers opened the second half with a 4-0 run to grab a 7-3 advantage with 22 minutes left. Senior attack Sierra Langkammerer cut the gap to 7-4 at 18:31. After another Drew goal, freshman midfielderMargaret Wall got the Bears back to within three at the 14:00 mark, but Potsdam got no closer. The Rangers scored the next three for an 11-5 lead. Bears junior attack Julie Perna scored her first of the season with 7:44 remaining, but the Rangers answered with the next five to ice the game. Simmons closed the scoring with just 22 seconds left as the Bears fell 16-7.

Reigning SUNYAC Goalie of the Week, senior Kaci Milligan was solid again for Potsdam, finishing with 13 saves. Christiana Carlini stopped nine shots for Drew’s first win of the season.

The Rangers outshot the Bears 38-25 and held a 29-19 advantage in ground balls.

Potsdam will now face St. Lawrence University in the tournament consolation at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 15.
