Big first innings give Knights softball doubleheader sweep over SUNY Canton

Potsdam, NY - With five runs in game one and six runs in game two, the Clarkson University Softball team scored early and scored often to put SUNY Canton in a hole in the first inning of each contest Monday afternoon as the Golden Knights came away with a doubleheader sweep of the Kangaroos, 6-4 and 9-0, at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 13-4 overall with their second and third straight wins against North Country foes, while SUNY Canton dropped to 6-10. Clarkson will be right back at Scott Field again on Tuesday when it takes on Johnson State in a doubleheader that is being made up from last week.

In the opener, Clarkson scored five times, all it would need to finish with a win. The game began with three straight Clarkson players reaching base on a walk and two singles. Chelsea Elliott then grounded into a fielder's choice to erase one runner, but the bounder to short allowed Jamie Bridge to score the opening run. Katelin Ferguson then doubled home Summer Lancette to give Clarkson a 2-0 edge and two batters later Ali Schwenzfeier hit a three-run homer to left, the Golden Knights' first big fly of the season. The game remained 5-0 until SUNY Canton found some offense in the top of the sixth. The inning began with a single, sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, but a walk continued the Roos' rally as Rhea Coad singled to make it 5-1. Stefanie Miller then doubled to center to plate two more runs and Annie Sharlow added a single to score Miller and make it 5-4. With the lead down to just a single run, Clarkson was able to pick up one score for insurance on an RBI-groundout by Bridget Woolley, which plated pinch-runner MacKenzie Pelton.

Clarkson starter Katie Pelton was touched four seven hits and four earned runs, but she struck out a career-high 12 hitters en route to her sixth win of the season. Raeanna Dunn, Elliott, and Schwenzfeier each delivered 2-for-3 efforts, with Schwenzfeier driving home three on her home run in the first. For Canton, Miller and Sharlow each collected two hits and Kelsey Morgan was saddled with the loss after going six innings and allowing nine hits and a walk.

In game two, the Knights once again piled on runs early, but this time it was taking advantage of miscues by the Roos. Dunn delivered a one-out single to start the rally and advanced around the bases on passed balls and Summer Lancette, who walked on the second passed ball of the inning that sent Dunn home, scored on a double from Elliott. Erika Jensen then drove in two more runs with a single and later scored on another passed ball. Schwenzfeier scampered home on an RBI-groundout by Louise Terwilliger to give Clarkson six runs on just three hits in the inning. Terwillinger would drive in two more on a single up the middle in the bottom of third and Dunn added Clarkson's final run in the bottom half of the fourth on a sac fly from Ferguson.

Jamie Bridge went five innings and allowed four hits and no walks while striking out seven to move to 7-1 this season. Dunn was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Jensen went 2-for-2 with two driven in and two more scored. Terwilliger also boasted three runs batted in. For SUNY Canton, Annie Sharlow took the loss, allowing six earned run on seven hits and two walks in three innings of work before being relieved.
