Geneva, NY - Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) continued his outstanding season for the Clarkson University Cross Country team as the junior once again paced the Golden Knights runners at the Liberty League Championships, held at Seneca Lake State Park.
The Knights finished fourth among six teams in both the men's and women's races. In the men's race, Clarkson had 94 points, trailing St. Lawrence (15), Vassar (61), and Rensselaer (79), while leading Union (150) and Hobart (183). The women's team totaled 132 points, finishing behind St. Lawrence (22), Vassar (37) and Rensselaer (87), but scoring better than Union (134) and William Smith (139).
Benway was the first non-St. Lawrence runner to finish in the men's race, coming in sixth overall (out of 83 runners) in 26 minutes, 36 seconds in the 8,000-meter event. Sophomore Pat Carroll (Queensbury, NY) also performed well, placing 12th overall in 26:55.98. Freshman Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) came in 32nd place in 28:10.63. Juniors Neal Campbell (Queensbury, NY) and Matt Gammariello (Webster, NY) rounded out the Clarkson scoring in 36th and 38th place, respectively.
Freshman Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) was the leader for Clarkson's women, coming in 26th place overall (among 69 runners) in 25:18.62 in the 6,000-meter race. Junior Maureen Hill (Latham, NY) came in 33rd in 25:55.54 as the second-place finisher for the Knights. Freshman Natalie Worley (Williamsville, NY) and sophomore Jessica Hernandez (Owego, NY) were just a few seconds apart in 41st and 43rd place, respectively, while Alicia Perras (Portsmouth, RI) rounded out the top five for the Knights by coming in 52nd place.
