Bengals take two from Bears softball

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (10-13, 8-4 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (4-18, 1-7 SUNYAC) 10-2 and 7-2 in Sunday afternoon's doubleheader. Senior catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Central) went 5-for-6 with two RBI. Junior centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 4-for-5 and scored three times on the day.

The Bengals pulled away in the second inning of game one, scoring four runs. With runners on second and third, Julia Blujus singled up the middle to score the first Hannah Dunlap followed up with a double to left center that brought in two. Buffalo State plated the last run after a fielding error.

In the bottom third, the Bengals extended the lead to eight. Abby Bachman, Melissa Woods, and Blujus each drove in a run with a single. Danielle Szymkowiak brought in Woods with a sacrifice fly.

Buffalo State scored two more in the fourth on an error and a sacrifice bunt, extending the lead 10-0.

The Bears ended the shut out after Falsion singled up the middle that scored freshman pinch runner Jen Darlak (Lockport, N.Y./Wilson). Brace got Falsion to cross home after a double to left, but Potsdam couldn't get any closer, falling 10-2.

Senior Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) (1-7) received the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, striking out one, and allowing seven earned runs on eight hits. Freshman Kayla Palmer (Chester, N.Y./Chester) pitched 2.0 innings and gave up one earned run on three hits. Marissa Hayes got the win for the Bengals, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing only four hits.

Brace went 3-for-3 with a RBI, while Falsion went 2-for-2 with a RBI and run scored.

The Bears started the scoring in game two with a one out single from Falsion. After stealing second and third, Falsion was able to cross home from sophomore pitcher Megan Fish's (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) single.

Buffalo State got the run back in the bottom first, when Abijah Adams hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The Bengals got another run in the third when Szymkowiak grounded out to bring in Blujus.

Emily Frajdofer and Woods both brought in a runner with a double and a single to extend the lead 4-1 after four innings.

In the fifth, after Szymkowiak worked a walk, Adams hit a two-run home run to center field to give Buffalo State a 6-1 lead.

Falsion kicked off the sixth with a triple to right center. Brace followed up with a single to score Falsion.

Blujus had a triple of her own in the bottom sixth and scored on a Dunlap ground out.

Potsdam could not get anything going in the seventh, falling 7-2.

Fish (1-4) was tagged with the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, striking out one, and allowing five earned runs on nine hits. Junior Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched the final 1.2 innings, struck out three, and allowed one run on four hits. Hayes pitched the complete game for the Bengals, struck out five, and allowed two runs on six hits.

Falsion went 2-for-3, scoring twice, and Brace went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Fish finished the contest 1-for-3 with a RBI.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow for their home opener when they host the College at Brockport at 2 and 4 p.m.
