BUFFALO STATE, N.Y.—Buffalo State (15-15, 5-7 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-20, 2-10) in both games of a SUNYAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Bengals held off the Bears for a 7-4 victory in the first game and then blanked Potsdam 7-0 in game two.

Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) got the Bears started quickly in game one. She walked to lead off the contest and came around to score on an error. Potsdam threatened in the top of the second, but stranded two baserunners. The Bengals answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two coming on an RBI single from catcher Melissa Woods. Buffalo State extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third on back to back hits. The Bengals added two more on a double from left fielder Chrissy Rennard to make it a 7-1 contest in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, senior left fielder Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) reached on a single and sophomore pitcher Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) walked, forcing Buffalo State starter and former Bear Jordan Sarat from the game. She was relieved by Nicole Adams who promptly gave up a three-run homer to Potsdam senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary). The shot closed the gap to 7-4. The Bears got the tying run to the plate in the form of Marsman in the bottom of the seventh, but she grounded out to third to end the game.

Sarat (2-7) claimed the win after allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks in 4.2 innings pitched. Adams gave up one run on Marsman's homer and struck out three in the last 2.1 innings. Hubinsky fell to (3-8), allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out two in four innings. Freshman Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched two perfect innings to close the game. Marsman was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

In the finale, the Bengals scored one in both the first and third and then broke the game open with a five-run fourth. Woods had a two-run single and Rennard followed with a three run double.

Ott was 2-for-4 for Potsdam and freshman center fielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 2-for-3.

Lexi Haley (11-7) went the distance for Buffalo State, scattering five hits and three walks for the shutout. Sophomore Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) (4-7) allowed five earned runs over the first three innings on seven hits and two walks. McCauley pitched two more scoreless innings, walking and striking out one. Chirinko pitched a perfect sixth inning.

The Bears head to SUNY Fredonia for a doubleheader with the Blue Devils tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
