POTSDAM, N.Y.—Buffalo State (9-8-1, 5-4 NEWHL) scored three third period goals to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-6-1, 2-6-1) 3-1 on Friday evening. Senior assistant captain Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Team Detroit) scored for the Bears.

The first period was tightly contested with the shots 10-8 in Potsdam favor. The Bears killed off two penalties and were unable to score on their lone man advantage. At the 18:25 mark, Morr ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the net after a pass from freshman forward Natalie Wasielewski (Carnegie, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) to make it 1-0. Junior defenseman Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Honeybaked) recorded the second assist.

Buffalo State killed off two Potsdam power plays in the second and were unable to score on their man advantage. Neither team was able to find the back of the net and headed into the second intermission with the score unchanged.

The Bengals tied the score at the 11:28 mark of the third. Senior forward Erin Gehen received a pass from behind the net at the top of the crease and wristed it home. The Bears were unable to take advantage of consecutive power plays in the middle of the period, but Buffalo State struck again with a shorthanded goal at 16:04. Senior forward Caitie Horvatits (Elma, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) was credited with the goal after the puck was misplayed into the net. With 48 seconds left, Potsdam pulled sophomore goalie Alexa Pfeiffer (Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar's). Gehen secured the contest with an empty-netter 11 seconds later.

Pfeiffer and Buffalo State senior goalie Justine Silva (El Monte, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) each finished with 27 shots. The Bengals were 0-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-5

The teams battle again tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Maxcy Ice Arena.
