PLATTSBURGH—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (7-20, 1-8 SUNYAC) fell to Buffalo State (21-10, 4-5) 3-0 and the College at Brockport (19-11, 5-4) 3-1 on the final day of SUNYAC Pool Play for the 2014 season.
In the morning match, the Bengals took three straight sets by 25-10, 25-22 and 25-18 scores. Senior outside hitter Liza Fields led Potsdam with nine kills and graduate student outside hitter Annie Smith (Chateauguay, N.Y./Chateauguay) and senior outside hitter Tia Wright (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each had six. Junior outside hitter Chelsea Sunday (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) contributed four kills and 10 digs. Freshman setter Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) finished with 17 assists and senior libero Gabby Arana chipped in 19 digs.
Against the Golden Eagles in the finale, Brockport captured the first two sets 27-25 and 25-22 before the Bears rallied for a 25-18 win in set three. However, the Golden Eagles held off Potsdam for a 25-19 win in the fourth set. Smith had another strong contest with a team-high 12 kills. Sophomore middle hitter Sarah Becker (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) posted a career-best nine kills, while Sunday was solid again with six kills, 14 digs and two aces. Topf added another 22 assists on the day and fellow freshman setter Kelsea Healis (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Cotate) contributed another 12. Arana finished the match with 23 more digs.
The Bears will close out the season at the Skidmore Invitational next weekend. They will take on the host Thoroughbreds at 7:30 p.m. on Friday followed by matches with Farmingdale State and Union College on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
