Bengals fast start sinks Lady Bears

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (13-2, 6-2 SUNYAC) jumped out to an 18-0 run en route to a 58-31 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team (4-11, 2-6) on Friday night. Bianca Smiley and Staci McElroy scored a game-high 13 and 12 points for the Bengals, respectively. Freshman forward Bailey Weigel led the Bears with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Buffalo State hit eight of its first 10 shots from the field and capped the opening run with two free throws from Jazz Bell. The Bears outscored the Bengals 16-15 for the rest of the first half. Junior forward Adedoyin Akingba got the Potsdam on the board with a layup at the 9:22 mark. A jumper from Weigel got the Bears with 14 at 22-8, but Potsdam didn’t get any closer in the opening period, trailing 33-16 at the break.

Buffalo State started the second half with a 10-3 run to open up a 24-point advantage. Potsdam answered with a 7-0 streak of its own, capped by a three-point play from Weigel, to cut the lead back to 43-26. A quick three from Kayla Crawford started another Bengal roll, 15-5 over the closing nine minutes of the contest for the 58-31 victory.

Buffalo State held the Bears to just 24.5 percent shooting from the floor, and shot just 36.8 percent itself. Potsdam turned over the ball 24 times, while forcing 14 Bengal turnovers.

Junior guard Katy Briedis and Akingba each contributed six points for the Bears.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow when the Bears head to Fredonia for a 2 p.m. contest.
