Bengals edge Bears women's lax in OT, 12-11

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-10, 1-7 SUNYAC) fell to the Buffalo State Bengals (8-8, 3-5) 12-11 in an overtime thriller on Senior Day. Sophomore attack Bailey Weigel paced the Bears with three goals, while Bengal senior attack Ashley Caporizzo recorded a game-high eight points (6g, 2a).

The Bengals opened scoring just 1:02 into the game. At 28:58 Caporizzo netted her first of the day. At 25:28 Senior attacker Denise Johns found the back of the net at 25:28 to spark a 3-0 scoring run for Potsdam. At 19:36 Weigel put in her first goal of the afternoon and at 17:08 freshman midfielder Brittany Blake added her first to cap the run and make the score at 3-1. The next seven minutes were scoreless until Caporizzo was able to end the drought at 9:34 with her second marker to cut the Potsdam lead to just one. Just 50 seconds later at 8:44, Bears senior Whitney Boshart got a pass from sophomore Emily Petit and made it a 4-2 contest. Buffalo State added one more before the half as sophomore midfielder Meghan Farrell scored with 3:21 remaining.

Caporizzo went to work just 59 seconds into the second half, adding another a goal to tie the game at 4-4. She struck again at 27:55 to give Buffalo State the lead. Weigel answered just 50 seconds later off an assist from Boshart. The rest of the period continued to be back and forth. At 25:16, Caporizzo made it a 6-5 Bengal lead. Bears freshman attacker Bri McClusky responded at 21:58. Caporizzo gave Buffalo State the lead again with an unassisted score at 20:50. Potsdam midfielder Margaret Wall evened the count at 7-7 three minutes later. At 16:01 the Bengals jumped in front again with a goal from junior attack Becca Martinez. Junior Michelle Varney put a shot past Bengals goalie Colleen George to knot the score at 8-8. Caporizzo gave Buffalo State the edge yet again at 7:08, but the Bears would not go away. At 1:42, Johns hit the net with a bounce shot to tie the score at 9-9 and to send the game into overtime.

John's goal gave the Bears momentum heading into the extra period. Just 21 seconds into overtime Blake ripped a shot past George to give the Bears their last lead at 10-9. Buffalo State regained the lead with goals from Farrell at 5:06 and Martinez at 3:57. Weigel completed her hat trick off a nice pass from McClusky with 1:07 on the clock to knot the score at 11-all. The Bengals took control of the ball off the ensuing draw control and Farrell scored with 36 seconds left for the 12-11 victory.

In goal Potsdam's Jen Chmiel recorded six saves and Buffalo State's George stopped 10 shots.

The Bears bested the Bengals in shots (32-23), ground balls (17-12) and draw controls (18-9) despite the loss.

The defeat brings to a close the careers of Potsdam seniors Boshart, Johns, Renee McKay, Julie Perna, Erika Olsowske, Britanny Coffey and Stephanie White.
