BUFFALO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (1-2, 1-2 ECAC West) fell behind 2-0 in the first period and was unable to catch Buffalo State (2-2, 1-1), falling 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captains Annmarie Lewis and Caitlin Manahan scored for the Bears.

The Bengals jumped out to the two-goal lead eight minutes into the contest. Christina Zandri scored at the 5:29 mark on the power play and an even strength marker at 7:37 putting Buffalo State up for good. Mel White and Courtney Carnes assisted on the first tally and Lauren Mallo on the second.

Potsdam dominated the penalty-filled second period, outshooting the Bengals 19-2. The Bears finally broke through at 11:16, capitalizing on the power play. Sophomore forward Jenn Crawford and senior defenseman Breanna Roy set up Lewis’ third goal of the weekend to cut the lead to 2-1. Despite the lopsided play, Potsdam wasn’t able to get any closer in the period.

Buffalo State regained its two-goal advantage just 3:55 into the second period as Christine Williams scored the eventual game-winner on assists from Brianna Murphy and Carnes. Defense controlled the play for much of the remainder of the contest, but Manahan struck with just 40 seconds left on assists from Roy and sophomore forward Jessica Silveira. The Bears pulled sophomore goaltender Dawna Salvarinas with 17 seconds left, but couldn’t tie the score.

Salvarinas finished with 20 saves and Bengal goalie Jordan Lee made 34 saves for the win. Potsdam outshot Buffalo State 36-23. The Bears were 1-6 on the power play and the Bengals 1-5.

“We played well enough to win, but we made several fundamental coverage mistakes that cost us,” said Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green. “The effort was good by everybody, we just didn’t get any breaks or finish our chances. We’re disappointed because we’ll look back on this game as one we should have had.”

The Bears are back in action on Nov. 11-12 when they host No. 2 RIT. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
