BUFFALO, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-17, 0-11 SUNYAC) fell to Buffalo State (10-8, 6-5 SUNYAC), 68-49 to close out their Western New York SUNYAC weekend. Senior guard Katy Briedis led the Bears with 18 points and six rebounds.

Buffalo State found their rhythm early and maintained a steady dose of pressure to disrupt the Potsdam offense. Sophomore guard Olivia Luciani paced the Bengals to a 16-4 lead within the first eight minutes of the contest, scoring 10 of the 16 points. Briedis was able to slow down the Buffalo State momentum with a pair of free throws at the 11:43 mark. The Bears struggled to keep pace as the Bengals extended their lead to 16 points with 4:07 remaining. Potsdam continued to fight and two good free throws by freshman forward Katie LaVoie cut the lead to 10 at the 1:37 mark. However, junior forward Bianca Smiley closed out the half with four points to give Buffalo State the 34-20 lead at halftime.

The Bengals continued to apply the pressure in the second half. Buffalo State quickly increased the deficit to 16 points three minutes into the final stanza. Briedis was poised to spark a Potsdam charge with back-to-back baskets at the 15:47 mark. The Bengals would extinguish the Bears spark and mount a 15-0 offensive in the final minutes of the game to secure the 68-49 win. Potsdam closed out the contest on a 10 minute scoring drought.

The Bears struggled from the floor, shooting 33%. Buffalo State held the advantage in rebounds with 43 to Potsdam's 27. Senior forward Adedoyin Akingba finished with 10 points.

Smiley recorded a double-double to lead the Bengals with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Luciani tallied 18 points and six boards and junior forward Shay Jackson added 10 points.

The Bears return to action on Feb. 1 when they travel to SUNY New Paltz. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
