Utica, NY – Senior AJ Beers and junior Sarah Duclos produced outstanding results to lead the pack for the Clarkson University Cross Country teams on Saturday morning, as both the Golden Knights' men and women claimed top honors at the SUNY Poly Wildcat Classic Invitational.

The Golden Knights' men placed seven runners in the top 20 to win with a low score of 27, ahead of Utica (41), SUNY Poly (70), SUNY Cobleskill (110), Mohawk Valley Community College (180), Royal Military College (194), Herkimer Community College (209), SUNY Canton (249), Albany College of Pharmacy (252), Cazenovia (280), Fulton Montgomery Community College (289) and Keuka (310). The women enjoyed similar results with their top seven placing in the top 16, but their score of 35 narrowly beat Utica (37). However, the Knights held a significant advantage among the other six teams, including SUNY Cobleskill (97), Keuka (134), Herkimer County Community College (162), SUNY Poly (164), Elmira (167) and SUNY Canton (169).

Seniors AJ Beers and Jacob Erdman finished 1-2 in the 8,000-meter race, an impressive feat considering the 133 participants. Beers finished with a time of 27 minutes, 24.6 seconds (5:31 mile), just a little under 10 seconds ahead of his teammate and classmate Erdman (27:34.1). Clarkson's runners continued to outpace the rest of the field, as Austin Smith took fifth in 27:48.7 and Kris Lizins came in eighth with a time of 27:56.1. That was the end of top 10 finishers for Clarkson, but Dennis Mooney came in 11th in 28:19.8 to round out the Clarkson scoring total. Jack Broderick then claimed the 13th position in 28:31.8 and Paul Moore finished off the Knights' top seven by taking 19th in 28:51.8.

On the women's side, Sarah Duclos was 13.4 seconds off the pace in the 95-runner field, but that was still good enough for second place overall, as she completed the 6,000-meter course in 23:14.1. Some incomplete teams provided runners that knocked some of the Clarkson runners down a few spots, but the team results still maintained the Knights edge over Utica. Abigail Sullivan came in eighth overall in 23:59.5 and Erika Abrantes placed 10th with a time of 24:11.4. Returning to competition for the first time in 2017, Alison Davis came in 11th in 24:25.0 and Taylor Lacey was one more spot down the line in 12th with a time of 24:39.0 to complete Clarkson's top five. If Lacey had somehow been disqualified, Clarkson still would have won, fortunately, as Rachael Jones came in 14th in 24:57.7, while Katie Ackner concluded the Knights top seven in 16th place in 25:04.0.
