POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with Norwich University on Saturday at Maxcy Natatorium. The women defeated Cadets 121-87, while the men fell 131-96. Freshman Samantha Coombs (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) led the women with two individual wins and senior Ricky Blackburn (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) matched her for the men
Coombs touched the wall first in the 50 and 100 Free with times of 26.48 and 56.81, respectively. Junior Emily Gulitti (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) followed with an individual win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:25.59 and combined with freshman Iris Curtis (Lewiston, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), Allison Medley (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) and senior Kira Wood (Hopewell, N.Y./John Jay) for a victory in the 400 Medley Relay (4:25.89). Senior Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y./Greene) and junior Colleen Fraser (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) each topped their event with Yeager finishing with a 5:43.88 in the 500 Free and Fraser grabbing the win in the 1000 Free (12:34.71). Junior diver Darien Frederick (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Island) rounded out the Bear winners in the 1 meter dive (186.00) and the 3 meter (178.72).
Blackburn took the W in the 200 Free (1:58.27) and the 500 Free (5:26.50). Freshman Ben Sitts (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) earned his first place finish in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:34.41, while junior Jacob Van De Valk (Genoa, N.Y./Southern Cayuga), freshman Joshua Parker (Farmington, N.Y./Victor), sophomore Andres Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./George Washington) and senior Tim Knapp (Newark, N.Y./Newark) defeated their competition with a 3:37.94 in the 400 Free Relay. Knapp also grabbed the victory in the 1 meter dive with a score of 235.05 and junior Ryan Kenney (Beford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) took the 3 meter dive with a 168.30 score.
The teams are back in action next Saturday when Potsdam heads to Brockport. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
