POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-0-1) steamrolled over the Sage Colleges (1-2-1) with a 5-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) ended the day with the first two goals of her collegiate career and freshman goalie Val Driscoll (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) earned her first win and shutout in her college debut.
Playing in the rain, both teams were sluggish out of the gate. The first goal came on a lucky bounce for the Bears. In the 15th minute, Morr fired a shot toward the net and the ball bounced off a Sage player and into the goal. Throughout the first half, the Bears created plenty of opportunities to score, outshooting the Gators 13-2. At the 31-minute mark, Potsdam sent a flurry of shots at Gator goalie Tegan Waddingham but was unable to pad its lead by the break.
Going into the second half, the clouds cleared and the Bears heated up to put the game away. Potsdam outshot the Gators 10-4 in the final 45 minutes and finally got the insurance they expected. Junior midfielders Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River) and Jess Sterns (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) connected to put the Bears up 2-0 at 51:27. Shortly after, Morr struck again with an unassisted tally. In the 69th minute, senior defenseman Nina Komosinski (Akron, N.Y./Akron) made it 4-0 with a pass from freshman midfielder Lexi Barnes (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South). With 12 minutes remaining, sophomore midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) accepted a pass from Komosinski to seal the deal for the Bears.
Driscoll finished with three saves for the win. Waddingham stopped seven shots for the Gators.
The Bears outshot Sage 23-6 on the afternoon and finished with a large 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow, when they head to Clarkson University's Hantz Field for a 5 p.m. battle.
