Bears women's soccer grind out record 7th straight win at Sage, 2-1

TROY, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (7-1) never trailed en route to a 2-1 win over Sage (5-3) this evening. The win extended the Bears' program record winning streak to seven games. Junior midfielder Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) and sophomore midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) each scored for Potsdam. Senior goalkeeper Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) made six saves for her third straight win.

The Bears put good pressure on the Sage defense in the first half. Potsdam tested Nicole Maher early and often, but was unable to solve the Gator goalie up to the break. The Bears held an 8-5 edge in shots after 45 minutes, but the 6-1 advantage in shots-on-goal was the more telling stat.

The Bears struck immediately in the final period. Just 26 seconds into the second half, Hubinsky knocked home a cross at the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal seemed to wake up Sage. Nearly 10 minutes later, Samantha Trimblett finally solved Thibeau to end the keeper's scoreless streak at 175 minutes. The teams traded chances for the next 22 minutes until senior captain Erin McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) set up Falsion's fifth of the season for the eventual game-winner. The Gators had one chance to tie the game with seven minutes remaining, but Thibeau handled it without a problem.

Maher was a tough luck loser with 10 saves for Sage. Potsdam outshot the Gators 17-13 and had the only three corners of the game.

The red-hot Bears will now host streaking Plattsburgh State (4-2-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. to open SUNYAC play. The Cardinals are 3-0-1 in their last four games.
