Bears women's soccer falls at Geneseo in season finale

GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (2-10-3, 2-5-2 SUNYAC) scored four first half goals and went on to a 7-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-15-1, 0-9) in the Bears season finale. Kelsey Raschke scored twice for the Blue Knights.

Geneseo wasted no time jumping on Potsdam. At 4:15, Sam Sherman launched rocket from 25 yards out that glanced off the hands of freshman goalkeeper Shannon Weader and in for a 1-0 Blue Knight lead. Geneseo never let up and scored three more goals before the half in a short burst. In the 25th minute, Shannon Spusta knocked down a goal kick and scored from short range. Five minutes later, Raschke scored her first off a Stephanie Clookey direct kick. Two minutes later, The Bears surrendered an own goal and trailed 4-0 at the break.

Freshman goalie Jaime Durant relieved Weader at the start of the second half. At 48:52, Bethany Kwarta made it 5-0 on a direct kick. In the 70th minute, Alexa Vojvodic sent a direct kick into the box and Allison Kopunek drove home the loose ball for a 6-0 advantage. With under four minutes to play, Raschke capped the scoring with her second marker to give Geneseo the 7-0 victory.

In goal, Weader stopped eight shots in the first half and Durant made nine saves in the second. For the Blue Knights, Julia Sanger stopped one shot in the first half to earn the win. Allison Stamp replaced Sanger in the second half and made three saves.

The contest marked the end of the careers for Bears seniors Heather Johnson, Stephanie Cox, Lisa Bates and Brittany Martin.
