POTSDAM, N.Y. – SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-0) broke open for five goals in the second half to take down Hilbert College (0-2) on day two of the Spartan Classic at D'Youville. Junior midfielder Rachael Venne (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack), junior midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), junior forward Amber Hyatt (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt), freshman forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and sophomore defender Brennan Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) each tacked on one goal in favor of Potsdam, while freshman goalie Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) recorded her first career win. Freshman defender Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) and Venne were each selected to the all-tournament team and junior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) was named MVP.

The game was knotted up with zeros across on the board throughout the first 45 minutes. The Bears managed to get off 22 shots, while Potsdam's defense kept the Hawks in their own zone leaving Hobika untested. Hobika's counterpart Hilbert goalie Jenna Castricone kept the Bears off the scoreboard with nine saves.

Potsdam wasted no time following the half by scoring two goals within the first five minutes of the second. At 46:24, the Bears were awarded a corner kick. Murray sent it into the box and Bruschini headed it home with her first career goal. Less than four minutes later, Falsion fired a shot that went through Castricone's hands for her second goal of the season. With the goal, Falsion moved up on the all-time career record list with 43 career points, which is tied for seventh and on the all-time career goals list, tied for sixth with 19. Following Falsion's goal, Hilbert made a switch in the net with the addition of Briana Stegmeier. She was tested right away with three saves, but fell short at 69:34. Venne subbed in at 67:25 and made herself known a minute and half later with her first goal of the season with an assist from Dean. The Bears kept the pressure with a goal off a corner kick from junior forward Olivia Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton) to Dean at 70:56, which was Dean's first goal in a Bear uniform. Potsdam remained on the attack the rest of the game and managed to tally their final goal at 79:58. Senior forward Morgan Robbins (Cape Vincent, N.Y./Thousand Islands) shot in front of the net and Hyatt deflected it in to confirm the 5-0 victory over Hilbert. The win sealed the championship crown for Potsdam.

Potsdam managed 36 shots on the day, while the Hawks were held to one. Castricone got the loss with nine saves and Stegmeier stopped six. Hobika had the lone save, while sophomore goalie Karlee Burdick (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) went untested in the remaining 12 minutes of the contest.

The Bears are back in action Tuesday night against St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. on Maxcy Turf.
