POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior captain Kaylen Van Wagner (Red Hook, N.Y./Hotchkiss) scored two goals as the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (4-1) shut out SUNY Canton (0-4) 4-0 in the annual Boyd Jones Cup. The Bears are now 6-0-1 in Jones Cup contests. Sophomores Olivia Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton) and Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) also scored for Potsdam. Senior goalie Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) stopped three shots for her 16th career victory and 12 career shutout.
Potsdam's pressure was stifling in the first half, outshooting the Kangaroos 19-0. Van Wagner scored twice in 1:40 to seal Canton's fate. She struck on a direct from in front of the goal at 28:14. Then at 29:54, she beat Roos freshman goalie Alison Wakefield (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) with a high shot to make it 2-0.
After more relentless pressure in the final 45 minutes, Seamans picked up a pass from sophomore midfielder Rachael Venne (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack), beat a defender and put the ball in the top left corner of the goal. Nine minutes later, Seamans sent a cross into the box and Falsion buried her fifth tally of the week.
Wakefield finished with 15 saves in the contest as the Bears outshot Canton 34-3. Potsdam also created 12 corner kicks to the Roos' 1.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night when they host the Sage Colleges at 7 p.m. Potsdam is 9-7-2 in the all-time series with Gators, including a 7-1 mark in the last eight meetings.
