OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (4-6-1, 1-2 SUNYAC) got goals from freshman forward Hailey Hollenbeck (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) and sophomore midfielder Jess Sterns (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) to defeat Oswego State (7-4-1, 2-2) 2-0 on the road on Saturday. Bears freshman goalie Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) made nine saves for her first collegiate shutout.
Potsdam made the most of its shots in the first half. Hollenbeck scored on the Bears first shot of the contest at 20:50. Less than four minutes later Sterns doubled Potsdam's advantage. Cole stopped all four shots she faced in the first half.
The Lakers increased their pressure in the second half, taking the first 12 shots, but Cole and Potsdam's defense held. Oswego never let up, but couldn't solve Cole as she added five more stops to her total to seal the Bears' victory. Oswego goalie Ayssa Glasshagel finished with just one save.
"I was happy that we got some great goals from Hailey and Jess on well-placed shots," said Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak. "I'm especially happy for our two juniors Kate Clauss and Kristin Webster because they've worked so hard and gone through a lot of heartache for this first conference win."
The Bears are back in action on Friday, Oct. 11, as they host SUNY New Paltz in another SUNYAC contest.
