MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam Women’s lacrosse team (3-3) used a big first half to power past Morrisville (1-4) in a non-conference road matchup on Sunday afternoon. Senior captain Carly Richards led the Bears with a game-high three goals and four assists and got three goals and one assist from senior attack Sierra Langkammerer.

Potsdam jumped on the Mustangs quickly, opening up a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes. Freshman midfielder Margaret Wall netted the first two markers followed by one from Langkammerer and the fourth from senior captain Whitney Boshart. Morrisville answered with three of the next four goals around a Bear tally from freshman midfielder Emily Petit to close the gap to 5-3. However, Potsdam closed the half on a 5-0 run over the final seven minutes, getting two scores from Langkammerer, one from senior attack Maribeth Simmons, one from junior attack Denise Johns and one from Richards. The Bears led 10-3 at the break.

Potsdam continued its string of nine unanswered goals with four straight to open the second half. Freshman midfielder Lina Herrera notched her first career goal 1:05 into the final period and junior attack Julie Perna followed 39 seconds later. Freshman midfielder Katie Putnam registered her first career goal at 26:49 and Richards capped the run two minutes later to give Potsdam a 14-3 advantage. After four in a row from Morrisville, Wall and senior captain Aubrey Macintosh struck to make it 16-7 with 5:03 remaining. Morrisville scored three of the final four goals with Richards getting the last goal for the Bears with 1:53 on the clock.

In goal, senior captain Kaci Milligan made six saves and allowed four goals in the first 41:00 for the win and sophomore Jen Chmiel stopped five shots and allowed the final six goals over the last 19:00. Mustang goalie Danielle Puzio finished with 10 saves.

The Bears outshot Morrisville 34-30 and picked up 26 ground balls to the Mustangs’ 23.

“I was pleased we were able to get contributions from so many players,” said Bears Head Coach Lauren Bruce of her team’s 11 different goal scorers. “We dominated the first half so were able to work in other players and try some new things in transition. We need to come out this way against St. Lawrence on Wednesday.”

Potsdam faces the Saints in its home opener on Wednesday, March 28, at 4 p.m.
