POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-3) won its second in a row with an 18-5 drubbing of the visiting the Morrisville Mustangs (1-5) this afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field. The Bears got four goals each from seniors Denise Johns, Whitney Boshart and sophomore Bailey Weigel. Johns and Weigel also added an assist apiece, tying for a game-high five points.

The Potsdam offense went to work early with a goal from sophomore midfielder Carolyn Herrera just 39 seconds into the first half. The goal sparked a 9-0 run for the Bears. During the run Johns, Weigel, Boshart and junior attack Michelle Varney each notched two goals. The Mustangs were able to stop the momentum with a goal at the 15:42 and another score at 12:09 to make the tally 9-2. After a scoreless six and a half minutes, Johns added her third goal of the day to spark a three-goal streak for the Bears to close out the first half at 12-2.

At the opening of the second half, both teams made goalie changes. Potsdam freshman goalie Sally Mooney made her first career save on the first shot she has faced after less than three minutes between the pipes. Scoring in the second half began with Weigel and Boshart adding their third and fourth goals of the day in the first five minutes. Morrisville answered with two consecutive goals from Megan Carlin and 19:15 and 17:00. The Bears then went on a 4-0 run with goals coming from sophomore midfielder Emily Petit, senior midfielder Julie Perna, Johns and Weigel. Morrisville scored with just 2:33 remaining in the contest to finalize the score at 18-5.

Junior goalie Jen Chmiel earned the win in today's contest after playing just the first half and allowing two goals. Mooney played the final 30 minutes, stopping one shot and allowing the final three Morrisville tallies. Caitlin Dunphy and Veronique Krohn each played a half for the Mustangs. Dunphy allowed 12 goals and made seven saves, while Krohn stopped four shots and gave up the last six goals.

Potsdam outshot Morrisville 39-8 and edged the Mustangs in ground balls 22-15. The Bears also dominated the draw controls, 20-5, getting seven from Weigel alone.

The Bears are back in action at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they open up SUNYAC play with a contest against the SUNY New Paltz Hawks.
