Bears women's lacrosse falls at No. 16 Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The 16th-ranked Brockport Golden Eagles (7-3, 1-2 SUNYAC) used a big first half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam Women's lacrosse team (3-5, 0-2) 19-11 on Saturday afternoon. Junior attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) matched her career-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Sophomore attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had three goals and an assist and freshman attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) chipped in two goals for the Bears.

Trailing 2-0 at the 19:43 mark of the first half, Weigel got Potsdam on the board with an unassisted tally. Brockport answered with two more before sophomore midfielder Brittany Blake (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) scored to cut the gap to 4-2. The Golden Eagles scored eight of the next nine goals. McClusky scored on a helper from sophomore midfielder Lizzie Marchbanks (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) at 5:34 and again to close the half with just 15 seconds left. Weigel assisted on the play and the Bears trailed 12-4 at the break.

Potsdam fought Brockport goal-for-goal in the second half. The Bears opened the period with a 6-3 stretch. Weigel got her second goal at 24:53 with an assist from McClusky. Then Weigel set up McClusky at 21:10 and Lapinski at 19:59 to close to within 14-7. After another Golden Eagle goal, Lapinski scored from Weigel at 16:56. Weigel then scored on a helper from Marchbanks nearly seven minutes later. At 8:08, senior attack Michelle Varney (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) finished the 3-0 run and the Bears trailed just 15-10. However, Brockport sealed the game with a 4-1 finish for the 19-11 final. Junior captain Katie Putnam (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) netted the final Potsdam marker with just 1:09 remaining.

In goal, senior captain Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) finished with 10 saves, while Brockport's Remle Harr got the win with just four stops. Golden Eagle Emily Zartman totaled six goals and an assist for seven points, while teammate Kelly Wall had three goals and three assists for six more.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they host No. 19 Oneonta State.
