Bears women's lacrosse fall at Utica 10-6

UTICA, N.Y.—Utica College (2-2) pulled away from the SUNY Potsdam Women's Lacrosse team (1-4) in the second half for a 10-6 win on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) had her best day of the season with 3 goals for the Bears. Megan Kane led the Pioneers with two goals and one assist.

Wall scored her first just 39 seconds into the game with an assist from sophomore midfielder Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School). Senior captain Emily Petit (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) put Potsdam up 2-0 four minutes later. Kane got the Pioneers on the board at 23:04. Newman answered with her 10th of the season on an assist from sophomore attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) at the 20-minute mark. Courtney Wheeler closed the gap to 3-2 19 seconds later. Senior attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) finished a pass from junior attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) at 14:28. Utica followed with back-to-back tallies from Rebecca Plunkett and Wheeler to tie the score at 4-4 with 10:31 left. Wall scored two straight for Potsdam and the Bears led 6-4 at 6:20. Kane scored her second with 28 seconds left in the half to begin a 6-0 run to finish the game.

Brooke Miller tied the game nearly 10 minutes into the final 30 and Tewasherake Barnes scored the next two including the eventual game-winner at 17:11. Plunkett made it 9-6 with 6:00 to go and Morgan DuPont closed out the scoring at 10-6 with 5:22 left.

In goal, Bears sophomore Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) finished with seven saves. Utica's Kells Casey made six saves in 45:32 to earn the win and Erin Jacobson made two saves in the other 14:28.

The Pioneers outshot Potsdam 30-17 and edged the Bears in ground balls (18-16) and draw controls (10-8)

Potsdam is back in action when the Bears host SUNY Canton at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18.
