ONEONTA, N.Y.—Oneonta State (7-5, 2-2 SUNYAC) used a strong second half to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-5, 1-2) for a 16-10 victory on Tuesday afternoon. Senior captain Whitney Boshart and junior attack Michelle Varney each scored three times to lead the Bears. Jillian Donodeo scored a game-high five goals to pace Oneonta.
The Red Dragons were able to stay just in front of Potsdam in the first half. Trailing 2-0 just over four minutes into the game, Boshart got the Bears on the board. After another Oneonta tally, sophomore attack Bailey Weigel got Potsdam back to within 3-2 at 18:46. The Red Dragons got the next two goals for their biggest lead of the half. Varney answered with two markers in 41 seconds for the Bears, the first coming on a pass from senior captain Denise Johns, and made it 5-4 Oneonta advantage at the 10:05 mark. The Red Dragons notched their sixth goal of the contest with less than three minutes remaining, but Boshart buried her second of the game with three seconds left in the half.
The Bears continued to hang with Oneonta through the first 12 minutes of the final period. Two goals from sophomore midfielder Margaret Wall and one each from Varney and Johns cut the Red Dragon lead to 11-9 with 18 minutes left. However, Oneonta pulled away with a 5-1 run to seal the 16-10 victory. Boshart completed her hat trick and Potsdam's scoring at the 7:48 mark.
In goal, junior Jen Chmiel stopped 12 shots for the Bears, while Oneonta's Frankie Wilson earned the victory with four saves.
The Red Dragons outshot the Bears 40-19 and edged Potsdam in ground balls (24-20) and draw controls (15-12).
The Bears look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to Geneseo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. SUNYAC battle with the Blue Knights.
