CLINTON, N.Y.—Hamilton College (5-2) scored two third period goals to down the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (2-8) 4-2 in a non-conference battle on Tuesday night. Senior goalie Jen Conophy made 40 saves, while freshman forward Sally Mooney and sophomore forward Izzy Fayerman each scored for the Bears. Katie Zimmerman recorded a hat trick to lead the Continentals.
Zimmerman opened the scoring with a shot from point-blank range just 25 seconds into the contest. For the next nine minutes, Potsdam withstood strong pressure
from Hamilton until they could even the contest. At 9:20, junior forward Amanda Lucky fed Mooney for a breakaway. Mooney skated into the zone on the right side and wristed a shot into the upper left corner of the net to tie the score with her first collegiate goal. The score remained even at the first intermission despite a 14-4 Hamilton advantage in shots.
Conophy stood on her head in the second period making 16 more saves. However, after the barrage Nikki Haskins gave the Continentals a 2-1 advantage on with a power-play goal at 17:15.
Hamilton didn't let up in the third and Zimmerman iced the game for the Continentals. She notched her second goal of the contest on the man advantage at 5:29 and closed out the hat trick with an even strength tally at 15:03. After the goal, Bears Head Coach Jay Green called time out. Potsdam responded and Fayerman struck at 17:10 to make it a 4-2 contest.
Hamilton's Sarah Schuchardt made just eight saves for the victory. The Continentals outshot Potsdam 44-10 in the contest. Hamilton was 2 for 4 on the power play, while the Bears went 0 for 3.
The Continentals impressed Green.
“In terms of speed and execution, Hamilton is the best team we've played,” said Green. “Our guys played their hearts out to match their quickness. We got a vintage Conophy performance tonight and that was nice to see. We also got strong a effort from Nadine Cunningham and Sally Mooney scored a very nice goal.”
Potsdam is back in action this weekend when they host Saint Michael's for two games at Cheel Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. for both the Friday and Saturday contests.
