Bears women's basketball comeback falls short against Brockport in season finale

POTSDAM, N.Y.- College at Brockport (8-17, 6-12 SUNYAC) holds on to defeat SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-24, 0-18 SUNYAC) on Senior Day, 71-62 Saturday afternoon in the Bears season finale at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Senior captain Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) recorded her 11th career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and added five steals. Junior forward Olivia Suhr (Rochester, N.Y./Marion) finished with a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds for Brockport.

The Golden Eagles sprinted out to a 15-point lead in the opening minutes of the contest. Weigel got the Bears on the board at 13:28 with two free throws, but Potsdam had a lot of work to do to get back in the game. The Bears offense finally lit up after a 3-pointer from sophomore forward Patti Dorgler (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) to start a 13-5 run. Weigel capped the run with a jumper to get Brockport's lead down to seven with 7:30 to go. Potsdam ignited again with a 19-4 run after senior guard Carli Reynolds (Indian Lake, N.Y./Indian Lake) drained a three. During the run, Weigel made a steal that lead to a fast-break layup that put her in control of eighth place on the all-time scoring list. The Golden Eagles closed out the half with two made free throws to tie the game at 32 apiece.

The teams exchanged baskets through in first six minutes of the half, but at 14:11 Brockport find its rhythm. Junior guard Erin Cunningham (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) stole the ball and made the fast-break layup to start a 21-7 run for the Golden Eagles. At 8:05, a layup by Weigel opened a 17-6 run for the Bears that was capped by two free throws from Reynolds to get Potsdam within four. Despite the offensive push from the Bears, the Golden Eagles ended the game by going five-for-six from the foul line to seal their 71-62 win.

Weigel ends her career with 831 points and stand in the eighth place slot on the all-time scoring list. Reynolds finished with 19 points and six boards, while senior guard Colleen McNamara (Geulph, Ontario/ Our Lady of Lourdes) added 13 points. Sophomore guard Hannah Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Sacred Heart) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles and sophomore guard Faith Welch (Albany, N.Y./Catholic Central) recorded 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The game concludes the careers of seniors McNamara, Reynolds, Weigel, and Veronica Sapp (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam). The women were honored prior to the start of the contest for their time and achievements with the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team.
