Bears women sink Lakers in overtime thriller, 68-64

POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-10, 1-7 SUNYAC) made a thrilling comeback to defeat Oswego State (5-10, 2-6) on Saturday afternoon 68-64 in overtime. Senior captain Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) had a team-high 16 points to lead the Bears, while two Lakers recorded double-doubles in the loss.

Oswego jumped out to an early lead with a mini 11-4 run, but Potsdam charged back with three straight 3-pointers from senior captain Patti Dorgler (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), freshman guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and senior guard Abbey LaPage (North Bangor, N.Y./Franklin Academy). The Bears got within two after the first 10 minutes. Senior forward Heather Hebert (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) had 11 of the Lakers 15 points during the quarter.

Potsdam's offense came out of the gate quick with three jumpers from sophomore forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina), LaPage and Driscoll for a Bear four-point lead. The teams exchanged baskets over the next three minutes before Oswego ignited for a 12-2 run that closed out the second quarter with senior guard Mary Mazzella (Peru, N.Y./Peru) starting and ending the run. The Lakers held the 19-15 advantage during the 10 minutes of play and took the 34-28 lead into the half. Driscoll racked up seven points for the Bears.

The Bears outscored the Lakers 14-13 in the third quarter, but Oswego still held the 47-42 lead. Dorgler put up five of the 15 for Potsdam, while junior guard Courtney Ameele (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) counted seven for her squad.

The fourth quarter was the best yet for the Bears with 16 points. The teams went basket-for-basket for the first four minutes before Potsdam's offense surged forward with a 12-5 run that started when Driscoll knocking down a shot from behind the arch. LaPage tied the contest at 2:45 with a layup after a steal from Shopovick and took the lead back with another layup from sophomore guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford). Potsdam got out to their largest lead of four with 20 seconds to go, but senior guard Allison Nunziato (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Averill Park) drilled a three to get within one with 11 seconds to go. Freshman forward Kim Pike (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) went 1-for-2 from the free throw line after a Laker foul, but Ameele hit a jumper with three seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

The five minutes of overtime was filled with a total of 16 free throws between both teams. Potsdam was 7-for-8 and Lakers posted 6-for-8 from the line. At 1:54, Smith drained a 3-pointer and the Bears never trailed again. Dufrane followed it up with four foul shots to seal the 68-64 victory.

LaPage finished with 12 points, while Dufrane and Dorgler each tacked on 10. Dorgler added seven rebounds and five steals to her stat totals. Smith, Shopovick and Drake each grabbed team-high eight rebounds.

Hebert and junior forward Zana Dillard (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) recorded double-doubles. Hebert finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds and Dillard put up 11 points and 11 boards. Ameele added 14 points, three steals and five assists. Mazzella rounded out the Laker leaders with nine points, 12 rebounds, five steals and five assists.

Potsdam shot 33-percent from the floor, while Oswego shot 30. The Bears went 8-28 from behind the arch compared to the Lakers 3-17.

Potsdam will hit the road on Tuesday when they head to Middlebury to battle the Panthers at 5 p.m.
