POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-7) scored a season-high 17 goals in a 17-6 rout of Morrisville State (2-5) on Saturday afternoon. Senior attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) recorded a career-high nine points on four goals and five assists. Senior captain Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) had a personal best six points on four goals and two assists and sophomore midfielder Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) also set a career mark with four goals.
It looked like it would be one-sided early as the Bears raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes. Wall opened the scoring just 1:22 into the contest. She then found sophomore attack Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) nearly three minutes later and Weigel closed the mini run at 25:11. Morrisville countered with two goals in 33 seconds. Senior midfielder Megan Carlin (Pawling, N.Y./Canterbury) got the Mustangs on the board with a man-up goal at 21:26 and freshman midfielder Ally Zlinsky (Owego, N.Y./Owego) closed the gap to 3-2 at 20:53.
Potsdam got the next three in succession from Wall at 19:41 and Newman at 15:39 and 12:03 to build its advantage to 6-2. After a Morrisville goal from senior midfielder Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y./Holy Names), Weigel notched her second at 7:10 and then set up senior captain Katie Putnam (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) for a man-up goal at 3:50. The Bears took an 8-3 lead into the half.
Weigel found Wall for the second half's first tally at 27:33, but Zlinsky and Wood scored twice in 30 seconds and made it a 9-5 game at 25:51. Potsdam then put the game away with eight in a row. During the 23-minute run, Weigel and Newman each scored twice and Wall, junior attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart), senior captain Emily Petit (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Cole also found the back of the net. When the dust settled, it was 17-5 Potsdam with 2:42 remaining. Wood closed the scoring at 1:29 to make it a 17-6 final.
In goal, sophomore Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) finished with nine saves to earn her fifth career win. Mustangs freshman goalie Kallie George (Tully, N.Y./Tully) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven goals and making six saves in the opening 22:50. Junior Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) closed out the final 37:10 with nine saves and 10 goals allowed.
The Bears outshot Morrisville 37-24 and picked up 29 ground balls to the Mustangs 15.
Potsdam returns to SUNYAC play on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when SUNY New Paltz comes to town.
