Bears volleyball team falls on the road to Saint Michael's

The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team was seeking some payback after watching Saint Michael's College rally back for a five-set victory just 10 days earlier in the Victory Promotions Invitational.

On Wednesday night, the scene shifted to Saint Michael's home floor in Colchester, Vt., where the Lady Bears became more competitive as the match wore on, but ultimately fell to the Purple Knights 12-25, 18-25, 20-25 at the Vincent Ross Sports Center.

Seniors Jenna Blujus and Sara Anderson directed the attack for Potsdam (6-8).

Blujus wrapped up her fourth triple double by accruing 13 digs, 11 kills, and 10 assists. The Baldwinsville native has now achieved the feat against Saint Michael's twice, and once against Emmanuel College and Plattsburgh State.

Anderson, who was named on Monday as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for her All-Tournament Team performance in the RIT Invitational, nearly stretched her streak of matches with double-digits kills to six. Anderson, a 6-foot-1 Lake George native, thumped eight more to her running total of 132 on the season.

Senior setter Lauren Manzo (Clovis, Calif. / San Joaquin) added 15 assists to go over 200 for the season while freshman libero Sloane Campbell ( Scotia, N.Y. / Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) reached double digits in digs for the fifth time with 11.

The Lady Bears were most competitive in the final set by pushing the Purple Knights (7-2) with 10 ties and six lead changes in the set alone.

At one point, Potsdam received back-to-back kills by Blujus and Tia Wright to put them up 13-10. The Bears led as late as 14-13 and later tied it at 15 on a Blujus kill and then again at 17 on a Felicia Barr spike set up by Manzo.

But that would be as close as the Bears would get as it dropped the next five points and eight of the remaining 11 possible points.

Potsdam will return home to take on St. Lawrence University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
